Since 1969, Virginia has been commonly recognized for its popular slogan, “Virginia is for Lovers.” In fact, this slogan is thought to be one of the most iconic in all of the United States. The slogan originated as multiple advertisements such as “Virginia is for History Lovers,” “Virginia is for Beach Lovers,” and “Virginia is for Mountain Lovers.” This was soon simplified to “Virginia is for Lovers” to simply encompass the idea that Virginia offers something for everyone and despite what your love is, Virginia has something for you.

For the history buffs out there, Historic Jamestown is a must-see. Jamestown is significant because it was the first permanent English settlement. While there, you can get a walking tour of the original settlement, or take some time to visit the museum with galleries and replicas of ships and other settlement items from the 17th and 18th centuries. The souvenir shops on site offer some unique gifts such as books like “Survival Wisdom & Know-How,” “A Handbook of Native American Herbs,” and “Soap Making.” Also available are replica whistles and bracelets that where worn by settlers and the original Native Americans of the area. Those that enjoy collecting coins can pick up one of many commemorative silver dollars. Children have a large selection of items as well such as dolls, toy guns, swords, bows, and replica helmets worn by the English settlers. Other trinkets would include Native American jewelry, pottery, and wooden utensils. Regardless of what history items you fancy, there is something for every traveler in Historic Jamestown.
Civil War Attractions
In addition to old English settlements, Virginia offers history buffs a unique opportunity to visit historic Civil War sites and plenty of interesting Civil War gift items. Pamplin Historical Park is one of the most exciting Civil War attractions in the country. This 422-acre park features numerous sites and tours, as well as the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier. Additionally, on this property is the well-known Tudor Hall. Tudor Hall is a restored and furnished plantation house from 1812 that served as the Confederate headquarters for a portion of the war. In the stores located within this park, visitors can find commemorative Civil War paintings and medallions depicting specific battles fought in the state of Virginia. Also available are books, jewelry, as well as confederate and union currency used during the times of war. For those interested in specifically military attire, there is a large selection of these collectibles as well. Compasses, brass horns, telescopes, belt plates, pins, and patches can all be found in both authentic and replica forms. Also available are copies of battlefield maps, patches, and parchments featuring local news and “wanted” postings of that time. Even children can find some fun Civil war items to take home like replica weapons, figurines, and musical instruments like the penny whistle and harmonica.

Virginia also has multiple national parks for the adventurous and environmental types. Such parks include the Virginia Explore Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah National Park. These parks offer many trails for hiking and biking, but also contain many specialty shops for those looking to pick up some souvenirs from these parts of the state. Many items here will either represent Virginia’s natural beauty, or give some inkling to the state’s history in these areas. Such items here may include fancy tea cup sets with painted mountains and wilderness, or salt and pepper shakers crafted in the shape of bears. Also available are trivets, cast iron anvils, hammers, and coal shuttles. These items can serve as rustic decorative additions, or they can be purchased in miniature sizes to add flavor to your desk as unique paperweights.
“Virginia is for (Beach) Lovers”
Finally, you won’t find any unique gift items or souvenirs here, but you would be remiss to not venture over to Virginia Beach and take in one of the east coast’s most beloved cities. Residents all over the eastern United States venture to Virginia Beach for vacation. While there may not be any one-of-a-kind gift options here, many visitors like to purchase a t-shirt or sweatshirt to commemorate their trip to one of Virginia’s gem cities.
