Souvenirs from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Souvenirs from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines can be as simple as a great keychain, a colorful postcard or a three-dimensional refrigerator magnet. Miniatures of sailing boats, created by hand, are a signature item, and can be customized to suit the buyer’s preferences. Artisans also create handmade jewelry and clothing from locally sourced materials. Spicy flavorings and hot sauces are bottled and sold by many Islanders working from their homes, making this a truly authentic piece of memorabilia. Dried spices and extracts, such as vanilla and chili, would also be a nice gift for the amateur cook. Other Vincentian souvenirs could be a luxury item from the duty-free shops, such as designer clothing, jewelry and accessories, crystal, silver and home electronics. A photo book full of pictures of beach sunsets, island greenery and aquatic animals could make an ideal piece of memorabilia to complement all of your personal vacation pictures.
The Gardens of Saint Vincent
As part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ colonial heritage, there are many wonderfully planned gardens, some that have been in existence for hundreds of years. The Botanical Gardens were first planted in 1765, under the orders of General Robert Melville to serve the military with medicinal herbs. Captain Bligh, notable for his first visit to Caribbean ending in the Mutiny on the Bounty, planted breadfruit trees here during his more successful, and pleasant, second voyage. Also of interest are the St. Vincent Parrots, the national bird of the islands, who make their home here. For those who are enchanted by the bright colors and lush scents of tropical blooms, a trip to the Montreal Gardens in the Mesopotamia Valley is highly recommended. Mazes of hibiscus, bougainvillea, and ginger plants create a playground for the senses underneath palm and fern trees, and provide a perfect place to take memorable vacation photos.
