Souvenirs from Dominica
The Commonwealth of Dominica, not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, is a Caribbean haven for beach bunnies and music lovers. Dominican souvenirs are a great way to remember every moment of your vacation, through photo postcards of local landmarks, figural key chains and imprinted fridge magnets. If you are looking for something with more heft, wood and soapstone carvings of animals, boats and trees are quite lovely in an office setting or in the study. Painted ceramic plates featuring beach scenes and birds display nicely in the curio cabinet, but may not be safe for eating off of. Furniture made from mahogany is nice, but will need to be shipped home. Smaller souvenirs from Dominica are batik printed sarongs, flip flops, shell jewelry, scented candles and body products. Locally distilled rum will be welcomed by any recipient, as well as cigars and coffee produced on the island.
Festivals of Dominica
Celebrating local festivals and holidays can be an entertaining part of a vacation, and gives you the opportunity to learn more about the culture and habits of a country. Dominica offers several major festivals throughout the year as families and friends gather together. Mas Domnik, or the spring carnival celebration, is connected to the Christian faith and the observance of Lent. During Lent, fasting is encouraged and many foods are discouraged, as a show of piety. To avoid wasting that food, feasts were held several days before the start of the holy season. That tradition continues today, as parades, dancing and food hold sway over the island. Independence celebrations follow a similar pattern in the fall, where the Creole culture and heritage is king. The World Creole Music Festival is also held around this time, when people from all around the world come to play in Dominica. Other festivals include the Dive Fest, and the Nature Island Literary Festival.
