Souvenirs from Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a territory belonging to the British, situated on the tip on the southern Iberian Peninsula, serving as a welcoming sign of the Mediterranean. Souvenirs from Gibraltar reflect pride in the region’s most famous landmark, the Rock of Gibraltar. You can purchase many Gibraltarian souvenirs bearing its image, such as post cards, art work, stamps, key chains, and refrigerator magnets. Statuettes of the Moorish Castle are another fun memento, and T-shirts, wallets, and water globes are other items bearing its image. Gibraltar’s location to Spain means you can pick up Spanish products and souvenirs, as well as items from throughout the region. Stuffed Barbary Macaques, replicas of the monkeys that live in the Upper Rock Nature reserve, are an ideal present for children, in addition to sail boat models. Whether you are enjoying a stop while cruising, or venturing through Spain, you will find a memorable gift in Gibraltar.
Gibraltar and History
Gibraltar is a tiny overseas British territory, measuring only 6.8 sq km in area, but with a population of over 30,000. The history behind the name is quite fascinating, as it came from the Arabic “Jabl Tariq.” This translates into “mountain of Tariq,” after the Moorish general Tariq ibn-Ziyad, who led an incursion into the peninsula in 711 AD. In fact, much history has been made in this small area of land. It has the last known evidence of the Neanderthals and was one of the Pillars of Hercules, famous in Greek mythology. The Carthaginians and Romans recognized the strategic import of the location, and set up outposts to monitor passage in to the Mediterranean. Throughout the ages, Gibraltar has been under the control of the Vandals, the Visigoths, the Moors, the Spanish and, finally, Great Britain. Negotiations are currently underway to cede the territory back to Spain, as a show of goodwill.
