Souvenirs from Maldives
The Maldives are a tropical jewel nestled in the Indian Ocean, and a one of a kind destination for honeymooners. Maldivian souvenirs reflect the natural heritage of the islands, using shells and stones to create stunning necklaces and dioramas, and coconut fibers to create coir rope, used in doormats and baskets. A lacquered box, vase or picture frame, created using tree sap, can bring a brightly colored memento to an office desk top. Native ships carved from coconut palm wood are a unique example of souvenirs from the Maldives, as well as intricately carved animal statues. Wicker mats are woven entirely by hand, using only grass, knives and a loom to create brightly patterned gifts. These mats are so special, that they are given to foreign dignitaries on special occasions. Thankfully, you can purchase these one of a kind Maldivian treasures to decorate your home.
Enjoying the Waters of the Maldives
The Republic of Maldives is comprised of a series of over 1,100 coral islands. As you can imagine, water sports are very popular here. Surfing is gaining in popularity, as people discover that the turquoise waters are excellent for riding in the months of June, July and August. Recently, surfing championships have been organized in the Maldives, adding new exposure to the region. If you prefer something a bit more leisurely, scuba diving and snorkeling are a wonderful option. The Maldivian reefs are teeming with life in the clear seas, playing host to over 2,000 species of fish, including sharks, tuna, brightly hued tropical fish and rays. Whale sharks, the largest member of the shark family, live in the warm waters, alongside sea turtles. You may even find a shipwreck or two as you enjoy the ideal conditions, January through August, for scuba diving.
