The Attractive Villa Ritter In Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic Pictured On An Magnet
This acrylic fridge magnet, featuring the Villa Ritter in Karlovy Vary is from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts. The Villa is a hotel providing spa treatments for its residents. These treatments include carbonated baths, magnetic therapy, and inhalation. Such treatments are familiar in Karlovy Vary which has been known as a spa town for centuries. Following the foundation of the town in the early eighteenth century its waters were mentioned by doctors such as Josef von Löschner. This led to the popularity of the town increasing, especially amongst the aristocracy of Europe. After 1870 rail links were also available with Prague and Eger leading to further visitor increases; in 1911 approximately seventy one thousand people visited the town. As a result of the First World War, and the unrest following the creation of the state of Czechoslovakia, visitor numbers declined. However, today Karlovy Vary is once again a popular visitor destination.
Karlovy Vary International Film Festival
In July each year visitor numbers in Karlovy Vary are supplemented with people attending the International Film Festival. Originally non-competitive the then small event began in 1946 and was split between Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně, becoming centred only in Karlovy Vary two years after its inception. For decades from 1948 onwards the festival was under strict government control. After the Velvet Revolution of 1989 there were other considerations besides the film festival and the 1990 event only took place following the discovery of some, previously unseen, Czech films and due to the attendance of famous names such as Annette Bening and Robert De Niro. The festival continued to be under threat for financial reasons. A change took place in 1993 with the creation of The Karlovy Vary Film Festival Foundation and the following year the festival again became an annual event after alternating with Moscow for over forty years. Today the festival is one of the biggest film festivals in Europe and visitors can stay in such lovely buildings as the Villa Ritter which is pictured on our acrylic fridge magnet.
