The Majestic Springfield, Illinois State Capital Pictured On An Attractive Acrylic Fridge Magnet
The city of Springfield is the capital of the state of Illinois. It is the sixth most populated city in the state with approximately one hundred and sixteen thousand residents. The land where Springfield is now was originally settled by trappers and traders in the early nineteenth century. The first cabin was built there in 1820 by John Kelly. The settlement was originally called Calhoun, after Senator John C Calhoun of Carolina. The town no longer favoured Calhoun by 1832 when its residents renamed it Springfield. The most famous resident of the area is former President Abraham Lincoln and there are many historical attractions in the area based around his life. Pictured on this attractive acrylic fridge magnet, from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts, is the Springfield Capitol Building which was completed in 1889.
Springfield Illinois The Historic State Capital
There are many historic sites to visit in Springfield Illinois. Many of them are connected with former resident Abraham Lincoln, but not all. One such historic building is the Dana-Thomas house which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for socialite Susan Lawrence Dana. The thirty-five roomed building was a ‘blank cheque’ commission for Wright and still contains a large collection of his original glasswork and furniture. The current State Capitol Building was completed in 1889. It was built in the French Renaissance style and is taller than any other non-skyscraper Capitol Building in the United States, including the Capitol Building in Washington DC. This impressive building is pictured on our attractive acrylic fridge magnet.
