Mount Rushmore: A Towering American Icon
The carving of Mount Rushmore began in 1927 and continued unabated until the completion of the memorial in 1941. It took 400 men working under the supervision of sculptor Gutzon Borglum to finish the work of carving the four 18 meter tall heads out of the mountain. Amazingly, given the scale of the project, there was not a single fatality. Depicted in the memorial are Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. To begin the carving dynamite was used to blast rock away; nearly 450,000 tons of rock were blown off the mountain. Then the more delicate work of chiseling the features of the four men was begun. Finally, the sculpture was carefully polished. Managed by the US National Park Service, Mount Rushmore attracts over 3 million visitors each year.
