A Dramatic and Breathtakingly Beautiful Scene in the Swiss Alps
The lovely Santuario della Madonna del Sasso is one of the most charming and picturesque scenes of Locarno, and as shown on this Worldwide Gifts collectible refrigerator magnet is a fantastic souvenir from Switzerland. This incredibly beautiful church dates back to the late 1400s, when a Fransiscan brother by the name of Bartholomew d’Ivrea is said to have had a vision of the Virgin Mary atop this mount near the village of Orselina. This magnificent cathedral was constructed on this site in order to pay homage to the virgin Mary, and has become the most important attraction of Locarno as people make pilgrimage to the Madonna del Sasso Sanctuary to pray to the Blessed Virgin.
The interior of stunning cathedral is ornately decorated in a lavish and luxurious style that honors the Madonna, while on the exterior a magnificent balcony offers incredible panoramic views of the city of Locarno, as well as the blue lake and towering mountain peaks in the background.
Other Interesting Aspects of Locarno
There are quite a few important historic sites at Locarno in addition to the Madonna del Sasso, such as the Castello Visconteo, which is said to have been designed at least in part by the famous painter, Leonardo da Vinci. There are a total of nine Swiss Heritage Sites of National Significance in Locarno, including the Madonna and the Castello. Visitors often enjoy visiting two ancient schools in the area as well.
Locarno isn’t strictly a historical area, with quite a few entertaining contemporary attractions to offer. The Astrovia Locarno is popular, a solar system model that stretches six kilometers along a bicycle path next to the Maggia River. Centovalli Railway provides incredible scenic views with a train ride through the famous “Hundred Valleys,” and the Falconeria Locarno is an amazing wildlife and bird preserve.
