One of Nine Swiss Heritage Sites of National Significance in Locarno
The impressive Castello Visconteo is one of the most popular historical sites in the beautiful town of Locarno along the lakeshores of Lake Maggiore, an Italian-speaking town near the foot of the Swiss Alps. This interesting image has been preserved for you on a collectible refrigerator magnet from Worldwide Gifts and is an appropriate souvenir from Switzerland. One of the reasons this castle is so attractive to visitors, in addition to its lovely and romantic appearance, is the local legend that the castle was in fact designed by the famed Leonardo di Vinci.
The entire historic city of Locarno is listed on the Swiss Inventory of Heritage Sites, and in addition to Castello Visconteo some of the other notable historical landmarks include two schools, the Ai Saleggi Primary School and the Secondary School. Many visitors also enjoy visiting the sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso, whose founding in 1480 was based upon a vision of the Virgin Mary by a Fransiscan monk named Bartholomew. The Madonna is the goal of many pilgrimages to the area. A gondola offers a high flying view of the city from Orselina to the top of Mount Cardada, where a chair lift takes you even higher to the top of Cimetta.
