Alhambra de Granada, Spain - The Perfect Souvenir of ‘The Pearl Set in Emeralds’
Alhambra of Granada, the world famous palace and fortress in the south of Spain is celebrated the world over for its stunning display of Islamic art and its theme of ‘Paradise on Earth’. It is a place that has, throughout the years, encouraged its visitors to reflect upon the dynamic aspects of the place whilst allowing the senses to be stimulated by its sensuality and calming presence.
The Alhambra, meaning ‘The Red One’ is a haven where opulence meets tranquility in a clever blend of the different design elements which allow one to feel serene and relaxed within an undisputedly indulgent setting. Moorish poets are quoted as describing Alhambra as, “A pearl set in emeralds,” which was in reference to the color of the buildings and the contrast of the woods surrounding them. Therefore a fridge magnet of the stunning Alhambra offers a pearl of a memory of the wonders of this rare architectural jewel.
A True Sensory Experience
It was designed by architects who wanted to cover every single last space with detailed decoration, from the largest most imposing areas through to the smallest nook and cranny. No stone was left unturned and undecorated, and no decorative element was enough. Even some of the arches were used not for structural purpose but for pure decorative effect. Walls are adorned with stunning and exquisite plasterwork and rich ceramics, and the coverings have wooden frames that show pain-staking attention to detail.
This truly is a feast for the eyes and a true sensory experience. Perhaps the most famous part of the Alhambra is the large courtyard that features a long water feature, spanning 24 meters in length and just over seven meters wide, a space otherwise known as the ‘Court of the Myrtles’. This area is famous for creating the impression of ‘The Floating Palace’, as the palace is wonderfully extended as its impression is reflected in the pond.
