The Amazing Vatnajokull Glacier In Iceland Pictured On An Attractive Magnet
The truly incredible Vatnajokull is the largest glacial mass in Europe; it has an area of approximately 8,100 square kilometres and an average thickness of 400-500 metres. Beneath the ice mass there are seven volcanoes, the majority of which are active. The most active of the volcanoes is Grimsvotn which erupted in 1996, 1998, and 2004. Vatnajokull Glacier is a spectacular sight to see; a sight which covers 8% of the surface of Iceland. Its beauty is represented on this attractive acrylic fridge magnet from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts.
The Ice Features Of Iceland
Not for nothing is Iceland known as “The land of fire and ice”. Its volcanoes and glaciers make for spectacular and exciting scenery. Glaciers are not just part of the scenery though; glacier hiking is an experience that brings visitors very close to nature. This is one time when people can literally “walk on water” albeit of the frozen variety. Tips like walking with feet splayed when ascending can help novices to navigate the frozen environment which at times can resemble a sea in suspended animation with all the accompanying curves and crevices. It may not seem like it but these massive ice areas are decreasing in size as a result of global warming. In 200 years it is possible that there will be no glaciers in Iceland; at the moment though these monumental slabs of ice make for a wonderful site, as captured on our acrylic fridge magnet.
