White Weddings in Saariselka
The village is also famous for hosting several white weddings. As the town is engulfed by snow during winters, all the weddings that take place there during that time of the year are often referred to as the 'white weddings.' Numerous couples in Finland wish to have a white wedding and travel to the village to celebrate the special day of their lives. During a white wedding, couples arrive in the chapel standing on a sledge that is pulled by reindeers or husky dogs. The Tieva Chapel and St. Olaf's Chapel have hosted most of the weddings in Saariselka; but couples also like having their wedding in the reindeer farms of the village.
The Lapland Region
Lapland is a huge region located in the northern Fennoscandia and falls mainly within the Arctic Circle. This region extends to Finland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden and is surrounded by the Barrents Sea on its north, by the Norwegian Sea on its western side and by the White Sea on its eastern end. The area in the Laplands was given this name because of the Sami people who inhabited these regions. They were referred to as the Lapp people in the past but are now known as the Sami people as 'Lapp people' is considered a derogatory term.
