History of Sarnath Temples
Sarnath is historically a deer park where the Buddha himself has been known to teach the Dharma. Located in Uttar Pradesh, India, this is also the place where Kaundinya, a bharmin, was enlightened leading to the birth of the Buddhist monastic community or Sangha. Almost five weeks after attaining spiritual enlightenment, Gautama Buddha traveled to Isipatana and Sarnath from Bodhgaya. He knew that he would be able to teach his former companions the Dharma and enlighten them. The first sermon he gave to them and their leading enlightenment encouraged the formation of the ‘community of the enlightened one’ or Sangha. The place is also famous because many people of prominence such as Yasa came to Buddha in order to become a disciple.
The Sarnath temple can be considered as the place of pilgrimage for Buddhist all around the world and since the place depicts the culture and teaching of Buddhism, the visitors are able to experience the true architecture of their religion.
