Image of World’s Brightest Lighthouse is Striking Souvenir from South Africa
This beautiful picture of the lighthouse at Cape Point is an impressive and memorable scene that has been memorialized for you on this collectible Worldwide Gifts refrigerator magnet. The Cape of Good Hope is one of the world’s most notable landmarks, a sight that holds great significance in the historical development of shipping and trade with Europe and the Far East.
Although the Cape of Good Hope is not technically the actual point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet, (that’s Cape Aghulas, 90 miles east-southeast) it was believed to be the turning point around the southern tip of the African continent and the spot when explorers first realized their dream of discovering a trade route to the Far East. When the Bartolomeu Dias, a Portuguese ship’s captain, rounded the Cape in 1488, he named it Cabo das Tormentas, Cape of Storms.
