Hyde Park's Storied History
Hyde Park is one of eight royal parks in London, and its history is vibrant and varied. The park began as a private hunting ground for Henry VIII back in 1536. Since then, it has been a venue for celebrations, conflicts, social demonstrations and royal parades. Famously, the park was the site of the Great Exhibition in 1851. Now open to the public, the park is famous for Speaker's Corner, a site for free speech and public debate, as well as its remarkable manicured landscape and tourist attractions. It boasts world-class public art, including the often-visited Princess Diana Memorial Fountain. Perhaps one of the most unusual attractions is the Carousel Bar, a pub that operates on a moving carousel!
