Beginning of Cambridge University can be traced back to the year 1209 when some Oxford students moved to Cambridge and the first college Peter House was founded in 1284. However, the city of Cambridge is far older than the University. The original Settlement was on the north of River Cam, on Castle Hill and the first town was built by the Romans. A milestone in the history of the city was the reaching of Railway in Cambridge in 1845. This, coupled with the Barnwell Enclosure Act of 1806 allowed the expansion of the town to the south and east. In 1951, Cambridge became a city. This compact city, apart from its historical treasure also has beautiful serene setting and a tranquil atmosphere that appeal to the senses. Currently, it is at the heart of the high technology centre known as Silicon Fen, which thrives on the University’s scientific prominence. University of Cambridge, since its origin, has consistently ranked among one of the top five universities in the world.
