This Magnet Shows the Big Apple, the City That Never Sleeps, the Great Metropolis of New York
Few cities have the romance, reputation and mythology of New York. The largest city in America, it has come to represent the "American Dream," from the old songs of Frank Sinatra (whose lyrics tell us that "if I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere - It's up to you") to the recent raps of Jay-Z (who sings about the "concrete jungle where dreams are made"). The mythology of the city is captured in images, like the one in this magnet, of the skyline of Manhattan at dusk, as the lights appear across the island, beckoning the world. This is especially true of the Statue of Liberty with her lit torch, standing as the traditional guardian of the city and the welcoming symbol to the continuously-arriving new arrivals to the "concrete jungle."
Enjoying the Magic of Manhattan at Home
While almost 50 million people visit New York City every year, there are countless others that dream of the Big Apple but are unable to visit. Some vicariously enjoy or remember the city through souvenirs, but others enjoy experiencing the magic through movies and music. Some classic films that bring to mind the city include: Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's, Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing, Ghostbusters and Wall Street. Music has also captured the city's spirit, from New York-loving rappers like Jay-Z and Nas to classic Harlem Jazz singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Count Bassie to crooners like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. However one enjoys New York - through souvenirs, the arts or a personal visit - the city's spirit is contagious, catching one generation after another in its grasp.
