Las Vegas, Nevada, is one of the entertainment capitals of not only the United States but the entire world. With its casinos, live venues, and theme parks providing fun and its hotels, spas, and luxury resorts providing comfort and relaxation, Las Vegas is the perfect vacation destination for just about anyone. What happens in Las Vegas famously stays in Las Vegas- but that doesn’t mean you can’t remember it fondly, perhaps with this striking acrylic magnet of shooting fountains outside one of the city’s famous casino hotels.
A Disparate History
For all its grandeur now, Las Vegas started out small and difficult to thrive in. The original attempt at settling the area was made by Mormon missionaries, but they were unsuccessful due to the harsh desert climate. The city itself was originally built on silver and gold mining, and earned a reputation even back then as a place where great fortunes could be made- or spent. It was something of a wild town in that time, and was one of the last places to be reached by the moralizing efforts surrounding American Prohibition. The city did not really take off economically or in population until after the beginning of the construction of the Hoover Dam.
Building Toward Today- and Tomorrow
The construction of the dam made city planners consider a new route for Las Vegas. Once the mines dried up, the area had few natural resources, but workers at the dam- and later, people coming to see it- would need places to stay and things to do. Las Vegas constructed its own resource that brought visitors from far and wide- entertainment. In more recent years, the city has refined this image, moving from focusing on adult entertainment to offering something for families with children as well, molding itself into a fun place for anyone of any age.
