Spectacular Romanesque Church in Historic Zurich
This entrancing image of one of the most important churches in Zurich is shown on a collectible Worldwide Gifts refrigerator magnet and is a fine souvenir from Switzerland. The 2000-year-old city is Switzerland’s largest city and is known as the wealthiest city in Europe. Grossmunster Church was built around 1100 and has seen a great deal of significant historical activity, as have Fraumunster and St. Peterskirche, the other two major cathedrals of the city.
Other important historical landmarks to see during a visit to Zurich should most certainly include the Schauspielhaus Zurich, which is world famous as one of the most important theaters in the German-speaking world. The first plays produced here were vaudeville acts in the early 1900s, and the theater continues to put on productions in a wide historical range of plays in its magnificent 750 seat house.
More Reasons to Spend Time in Zurich
After strolling through the old town historic district of Zurich along avenues such as Augustinergasse and taking in some shopping at Banhhofstrasse, one may wish to indulge in some more diverse activities such as enjoying the natural beauty of Lake Zurich with a lakeside promenade. There many grassy parks where you can enjoy a picnic with your family and places to sunbathe, as well as a host of street performers and vendors for entertainment and shopping.
You could also take the funicular railway to the top of Mount Uetilberg, which offers an incredible panoramic view of the city of Zurich and the distant Alps. There are also lots of mountain bike and hiking trails for the more adventurous travelers, trails that in winter are converted into sled runs. Another fun family adventure would be a trip to Zoo Zurich and its Masoala Rainforest to see a tropical garden and many fascinating and exotic animals.
