Geography of the Island
The island is shaped as a quadrilateral and has void sides. Its greatest length is around nineteen kilometers and widest breadth is approximately fourteen to fifteen kilometers. The Christmas Island is situated at 10°30’S 105°40’E. It covers a total area of a hundred and thirty five square kilometers and has a 138.9km long coastline. This island is a smoothened peak of a mountain that is around 14800 feet high; the mountain was basically a volcano and its summit is made by a series of lime stones lying on top of each other.
Flora of the Christmas Island
The island was uninhabited until the nineteenth century. Due to this reason, different and unique kinds of fauna and flora started inhabiting the island. Around two-thirds of this island has been converted into a National Park that is administered by the Australian Department of Environment and Heritage. Flora of the island includes trees, shrubs, vines, herbs, ferns and grass of different kinds. Prominent plants are: Arenga listeri, Dendrocnide peltata, Pandanus elatus, Grewia insularia, Asystasia alba, Peperomia rossi, Dicliptera maclearii, Ischaemum nativitatis, Zeuxine exilis, Flickingeria nativatis, Brachypeza archytas, Phreatia listeri, Asplenium listeri, Abution listeri and Pandanus christmaterisis.
