The country is surrounded by a total of 6 countries: Niger on its eastern side; Benin on its Southeast; Ghana and Togo towards its southern end; Cote d'lvoire on the southwest; and Mali towards its northern side. Initially, the country was known as the Republic of Upper Volta; its name was changed to Burkina Faso on 4th August, 1984 by President Thomas Sankara. These kingdoms were converted to a French territory during 1896 and gained freedom from the French in 1960.
