Lucerne is a beautiful small city in the heart of Switzerland, across the lake from Altdorf. The Lucerne City has many eye-catching sites for tourists to visit like Chapel Bridge over the Reuss River, Mount Pilatus, Mount Titlis, Mount Rigi, Stanserhorn, and Schilthorn-Piz Gloria. Lucerne is a tourist favorite mainly because of its location at the end of the north lake, cobblestone streets, snow covered mountains, spires and turrets and towers and bridges. Snowcapped Alps loom in the distance as you take a ride downtown, Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus are at the south of the city. It is impossible to leave such a place without a souvenir!

Interesting Facts about Lucerne City View

German composer and theatre director, Richard Wagner spent many his years in Tribschen, (outskirts of Lucerne). Italian conductor, Arturo Toscanini founded the Lucerne Festival of Music (one of the most important musical events in Europe); the festival takes place annually in April. Lucerne inhabitants are very sports-oriented people. In the summers, there are international rowing regattas, horse races, and horse-jumping contests. The famous Lion Monument in Lucerne was structured in the memory of the Swiss soldiers, who lost their lives while serving the French king Louis the XVI during the French Revolution.

History of Lucerne City View

The glowing city of Switzerland was not always a city, Lucerne city began as a St. Leodegar monastery (8th century Benedictine cloister). As the time passed the small monastery community grew into a settlement along the Reuss River. In history books, Lucerne's birth date is cited to be 1178, the time when the monastery officially transformed into a city. Fortifications, such as the well-known chapel bridge is the evidence of that era.
