The Theme of This Souvenir Fridge Magnet - The University of Wisconsin - is One of American's Finest Universities
Located within the city of Madison, the University of Wisconsin, is the state's central flagship and is renown around the United States as one of the top research institutions in the nation. It is also a particularly beautiful campus as it is located on an isthmus between two lakes, Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. The campus has a number of iconic buildings, including Bascom Hall (1857) - the "Heart of the Campus", the Victorian Gothic Music Hall (1878), the modernist Van Hise Hall (1967) - the tallest building on campus and home to language departments, Graingers Hall (1993) - the home of the Wisconsin School of Business. Beyond architecture, there are a number of on-campus attractions for visitors, including the Geology Museum (which houses as walk-through cave and a piece of the famous Barringer meteorite), the Zoological Museum, the Chazen Museum of Art and the hands-on L.R. Ingersoll Physics Museum
Madison Beyond the University Campus
Madison is a popular destination for visitors traveling through Wisconsin because of its vibrant cultural scene. Considered one of the best places to live in America, is has a rich cafe and restaurant culture; it's selection of craft beers is extensive and it is home to the annual Great Taste of the Midwest craft beer festival. The Dairy Market, a farmer's market, is a great place to pick up local cheeses (Wisconsin is famous for its cheese production) as well as produce. The city has a great live music scene, including a large number of indy rock bands; more formally, it is home to the Madison Opera and the Madison Symphony Orchestra. In general, though, the city has a funky, counter culture feel to it (for instance, in 2009 the City Council voted to make the pink plastic lawn flamingo the city's "official bird").
