The Lonely Man

In this image of White Sands National Park, this souvenir from United States depicts the cowboy. He is riding a brown horse and is dressed in his characteristic clothes which include the sombrero, that is the hat, the boots, the leather jacket, thicks pants and a colorful shirt. The cowboy and the horse are in motion, as he is controlling the animal in an effort to do his job. The landscape is deserted, making it the typical territory for this man who learnt to live by himself. He is a lonely man in the middle of nowhere.

The Character of a Country

The cowboy is the most emblematic American character to the East of Mississippi river. It is related to the wide space and non referential landscape where nature rules and the man is just one more element. It is the man and the landscape, both are best friends and enemies. In the wide space of the White Sands National Park, it is no wonder that the cowboy got a monument to remind the visitor that men have been by themselves in this territory for many decades.

Also, it nods at a culture that no longer exists in the wide territory of United States. The traveler can recall John Huston's movie The Misfits, one of American classics starring Marylyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomenry Clift. This movie portrays the vanishing of the cowboy as it is replaced by modernity, in the movie by the automobile which takes the place of the horse. The cowboy loses his identity. In the movie, the old cowboys remain as clownish characters of a rodeo, or rudimentary hunters of horses seeking their meat. This monument is an image that makes us reflect on old times. This is a great travel souvenir that will make us nostalgic of old western movies.
