This Souvenir Fridge Magnet Shows A Statue in Front of Ted Turner's Restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri

In Missouri's Kansas City is a local foodie landmark: Ted's Montana Grill. This is a casual restaurant chain that features a bison-centered menu. The American Bison (also called the buffalo) was close to extinction in the early part of the 20th century, due to hunting and the destruction of its habitat by ranchers. There were numerous campaigns to save the beast and Ted's Grill is a unique one: media mogul Ted Turner opened this chain in 2002 with the belief that if bison were raised for their meat there would be a strong economic incentive to maintain the species. Well it might not appear so at first, the restaurant aims to have a strong environmental impact, using eco-friendly bathrooms and attempting to cut down on waste. With forty six locations across the USA, it is a great place to try a unique taste of the American landscape.

The Buffalo Once Ruled This Landscape But Today is a Memory

Outside of the plates of Ted's Montana Grill, there are no bison in Kansas City today. However, a hundred and fifty years ago this was a bison-dominated landscape. Travelers through the region described great herds of the beasts that were like moving seas - stretching as far as the eye could see and with pound hooves like thunder. Unfortunately, these mighty herds were a direct target of US colonization policy. The US Army believed that eliminating the herds, which were the primary food source of their indigenous enemies, would weaken the native peoples and make them amenable to conquest. They were also hunted in huge numbers for their skins. The devastation was terrible and almost complete - in the early 20th century only one herd of less than fifty individuals existed in a hidden valley of Yellowstone National Park. Today, the bison have begun to make a recovery in parks and ranches, but the thundering herds remain but a memory.
