Different Names of the Lake
Lake Superior has several different names. The Ojibwe used to call it as 'gichigami', which means big water. This name has been mentioned in the 'Song of Hiawatha' by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and in the 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' by Gordon Lightfoot as Gicthe Gumee. The very first French voyagers who visited the lake sometime in the seventeenth century referred to is 'le lac superior', which means the 'upper lake.' The Jesuit followers referred to the lake as 'Lac Tracy' and the English named it 'Lake Superior', as it is bigger in magnitude amongst other lakes located in that continent.
