The Portland Headlight In Maine Captured On A Colourful Vinyl Fridge Magnet

Looking out over the water the Portland Headlight in Maine is perfectly captured on this vinyl fridge magnet from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts. This historic lighthouse was constructed at the instruction of George Washington and work began on the structure in 1787. Completion was achieved in 1791 making it the oldest lighthouse in Maine. Originally the lighthouse had a keeper onsite, this was the case until 1989, but it is now controlled remotely by the United States Coastguard. What was once the keeper's house is now a maritime museum. Portland Headlight lies on land at the entrance to Portland Harbour and has remained little changed as it has protected ships over the years.

Visiting The Portland Headlight In Maine

The Portland Headlight is a popular attraction with visitors, especially as it lies adjacent to the ninety acre Fort Williams Park. The park provides a space in which members of the public can play sports, hike and picnic. The light itself is not open to the public but the maritime museum in the former keeper's house provides a fascinating insight into the history of the structure. The museum, and the onsite shop, is open daily. The grounds and the museum are owned and maintained by the town of Cape Elizabeth whilst the United States Coastguard is responsible for the beacon and the fog signal. Historically a military fort stood in what is now Fort Williams Park and some of the original structures remain including Goddard Mansion which was once the home of Colonel John Goddard. The building is not in the grand condition it once was but it still makes an interesting backdrop to the modern scene of runners or people playing baseball. The area is a beautiful place to visit as can be seen from the picture on our attractive vinyl fridge magnet.
