An Iconic Image to Represent the Crescent City

The bronze statue of General Andrew Jackson atop his rearing horse, doffing his hat in salute, is a wonderful image to be captured for posterity on this Worldwide Gifts refrigerator magnet. Located in the center of Jackson Square in New Orleans, a picture of the Andrew Jackson equestrian statue is a great souvenir from Louisiana.

Originally named the Place d'Ames, Jackson Square was renamed in 1815 in honor of the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, although the statue wasn't erected until 1856, nearly twenty years after Andrew Jackson completed his second term in office as President of the United States.

Look Familiar? You May Have Seen Andrew Jackson Elsewhere

The statue of Andrew Jackson that is located in Jackson Square, New Orleans, is actually the second in a set of four identical statues that were cast in bronze by the historic sculptor, Clark Mills. The original statue - an image familiar to people around the world- stands in Lafayette Park in front of the White House in Washington, D.C.

The original Andrew Jackson statue has the distinction of being the first bronze statue cast in the United States. It was also the first bronze equestrian statue in the world to be cast with the horse supported only by his rear legs, which was a historically significant feat for the sculptor to have accomplished. The original statue was placed in front of the White House in 1853, and recreated for Jackson Square three years later. Mills created a third edition of the Andrew Jackson equestrian statue for Nashville in 1880, and his iconic statue was copied in 1987 for Jacksonville, Florida.

The Jackson Square statue shown here stands directly in front of St. Louis Cathedral in the center of paved circular pathways in a landscaped park.
