Beautiful Image from One of America's Greatest Public Places

Jackson Square in New Orleans is a famous historic park, and this view that includes the majestic St. Louis Cathedral has been captured on a Worldwide Gifts fridge magnet for a great souvenir from Louisiana. Jackson Square is in the French Quarter alongside the Mississippi River, and it's one of the most visited spots in New Orleans.

The Jackson Square park was originally called Place d'Ames when it was built in 1721, and was renamed Jackson Square in 1815 after the famous Battle of New Orleans. There is a statue of General Andrew Jackson on his horse that stands in the center of Jackson Square today. During the city's colonial era this was the heart of the city of New Orleans and where its most important buildings were located. The St. Louis Cathedral, the Cabildo and the Presbytere are the three most famous 18th century buildings located on the north side of the park.

The French Quarter and the Moon Walk

A pedestrian mall was created around Jackson Square in 1971 when the surrounding streets were closed to motorized traffic, creating the area known today as the French Quarter. Decatur Street, Chartres Street, St. Ann and St. Peter Streets are known for their historic ambience as much as for the good times atmosphere associated with the French Quarter. The Moon Walk is a boardwalk built on top of the levee in front of Jackson Square and named for the Mayor in office at the time of its construction.

Today Jackson Square is known for live music and street artists. Musicians play for tips, and the sound of saxophone and trumpet always fills the air here. You can have a cartoon drawing of yourself made by a street caricature artist, or buy one of the amazing French Quarter sketches that are always in progress.
