Description

This Souvenir Fridge Magnet Shows the Dramatic Contemporary Architecture of the Indianapolis Central Library

Located in Indianapolis, the capital city of the American Great Lakes state of Indiana, this image is of the city's Central Library. The Central Library is part of the larger Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, which has twenty two other branches around the county. The building was constructed in 1917 and looks out across the larger five-block War Memorial Plaza; it was built in a Neo-Classical design using white stone like many public buildings of its era. However, by the end of the 20th century, the structure had become dated and it was decided that a renovation and upgrade was needed. Work began in the early 21st century and was completed in 2007, and as you can see in this image, it was a dramatic modern overhaul of the interiors while still leaving the classical facade.

Things to Do and See in Indianapolis, Indianapolis

The twelfth largest (and fastest-growing) city in the United States, Indianapolis has much to offer both the domestic and foreign visitor. By far the most famous event in the city's annual calendar is the Indianapolis 500, a five-hundred mile car race on a circular track at the Indianapolis Speedway. The premier level of car racing in the United States, "Indycar" is named after this race. The city also hosts the NASCAR Brickyard 400 race and the NHRA drag racing nationals every year, together making it the capital of US car racing. Beyond racing, the city has a number of prominent sites including the sprawling War Memorial Plaza, the Indianapolis Zoo, the Indianapolis Museum of Modern Art, the Indiana State Museum and the Indiana State Fair, which brings almost a million visitors a year. Those looking to kick back and relax often find themselves at the famous Slippery Noodle Inn, the center of the city's blues scene, which has been open since 1850.
