The Green, Greys, And Blues Of Chicago Illinois Captured On An Acrylic Fridge Magnet

The Chicago skyline is dominated by its famous skyscrapers; it is home to three of the United States' five tallest buildings including the world famous Willis Tower, formerly known as Sears Tower. The other tall structures include the Aon Center which was originally called The Standard Oil Building and stands one thousand, one hundred and thirty six feet in height. Designed by Edward Stone it was originally faced with marble but the Chicago weather wore at the marble and a decision was made to replace it to avoid any accidents. The building was completely refaced with granite. Another of the iconic Chicago skyscrapers is the John Hancock Center which stands one thousand, one hundred and twenty seven feet high and was designed by Fazlur Khan, a structural engineer. Chicago's amazing soaring skyscrapers are captured perfectly on this acrylic fridge magnet from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts.

The Architecture Of Chicago, Illinois

The predominant feature of Chicago's architecture is the skyscraper. As a result of the Great Fire of 1871 the buildings in the city are, to a great extent, known for originality rather than age. The use of steel skeletons in the construction of buildings, and later the use of plate glass and steel throughout the structure, became known at the time as the Commercial Style. That was Chicago of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century when names such as Jenney, Sullivan and Burnham were amongst others known as exponents of the new building style. As the years have passed historians have now christened this the Chicago School of architecture. Whatever name is given to these design pioneers it is certain that they began the creation of some incredible structures as can be seen on our attractive acrylic fridge magnet.
