The Magnificent Chicago, Illinois Skyline With River Foreground Pictured On An Acrylic Fridge Magnet
The Chicago River is actually a system of rivers and canals in Chicago with a total combined length of one hundred and fifty six miles. The waterways are a combination of natural and manmade; although the water has always been there its flow has been manually altered in attempts to avert water shortages in the area. The river is home to several species of fish including bass, carp and catfish, and is a popular venue with pleasure fishermen although there are warnings about eating some of the fish. There are no problems with the impressive view the Chicago River creates with the soaring Chicago buildings along its banks, as depicted on this attractive fridge magnet from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts.
The Chicago River Waterways, Chicago, Illinois
If you visit Chicago at a certain time of year you will be lucky enough to see the miracle of the Chicago River water turning green. Well maybe not quite a miracle; this is the annual event of colouring the water to honour St Patrick's Day and it is timed to take place on the closest Saturday to the day itself, the seventeenth of March. It is the local fire service that undertakes this task, in recognition of the importance of the day to a city with such a large Irish community. But they always insist that they have a little help from a leprechaun. In 2014 the Chicago River will be home to colours of a different hue when the inaugural Great Chicago Fire Festival takes place. During the event, scheduled for October, glowing fibreglass statues will float down the river and there will be acrobats, live music, and a fire spectacular. Whatever its colour, or the events taking place there, the Chicago River makes an attractive site as can be seen on our acrylic fridge magnet.
