A Sea Turtle On The Island Of Hawaii Pictured On An Acrylic Fridge Magnet
There are three types of sea turtle native to the Hawaiian Islands; the Green, the Hawksbill, and the Leatherback. The Green Sea Turtle is a protected species. It was a source of meat and decoration for native Hawaiians prior to the arrival of western culture but it was only when these cultural changes came about that harvesting of the creatures massively increased. It was not until 1974 that Hawaii introduced measures to protect the turtles but these were mostly ignored until 1978 when they were officially listed as threatened. Today the turtles have an environment in which they can prosper but numbers are still low in comparison to numbers pre westernisation. Visitors can swim with the turtles today, at virtually any area of the Kona area of Hawaii 'The Big Island'. One of these marvellous turtles is pictured on this attractive acrylic fridge magnet from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts.
Visiting The Island Of Hawaii 'The Big Island'
The Island of Hawaii in the state of the same name is known as The Big Island as that is exactly what it is, the biggest of the Hawaiian Islands. It is also the youngest of the islands and is home to one of the world's most active volcanoes, Kilauea. The island's many climate zones make it a fascinating place to visit. There are snow -capped mountains on the island, but there are also volcanic deserts and beaches of black sand. The sights can truly be admired by taking a helicopter trip to view the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and waterfalls such as the four hundred and forty two foot high Akaka Falls. Hawaii is a paradise of nature, as can be seen from the picture of one of the native sea turtles on our acrylic fridge magnet.
