The Holy Ebenezer Baptist Church and Its Importance

One of the most famous historical churches, the solace for many citizens of the Sweet Aburn Community is this glass paned red triangular roofed Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. This church was one of Atlanta's most influential African American churches during the first half of the twentieth century. It is the place where Martin Luther King Jr. was baptized as a child. Also, Ebenezer Baptist Church was the platform from which Martin Luther King initiated his preaching career. Organizational meetings, leading to the foundation of South Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, were often held at this church. In 1960, Dr. King Jr. served as co-pastor with his father "Daddy King". After his death in 1968, Ebenezer Baptist Church was chosen the place of his funeral. This acrylic fridge magnet souvenir with its depiction of Ebenezer Baptist Church is an excellent memento for tourists as a sacred relic to keep at home.

Few Facts about Ebenezer Baptist Church

John Andrew Parker was the founder of the church in 1886. After eight years, King Jr.'s maternal grandfather, Alfred Daniel Williams, was declared the second pastor of Ebenezer. Under his guidance, the members of the church increased from 13 to 750 by 1913. He constructed a new building to accommodate around 1250 people in its auditorium and gallery which was completed in 1914. His son was announced as the next pastor in 1931. Later on, he was joined by his son, King Jr., as a co-pastor. The charge of restoring this significant church was taken up by The National Park Service in 2001.
