A Historical Landmark in America's Oldest City

The majestic image of the Cathedral Basilica of St Augustine is a beautiful picture depicted on this Worldwide Gifts fridge magnet and a memorable souvenir from Florida. The historical city of St. Augustine is a major tourist attraction in Florida and the southern U.S., with many intriguing architectural and historical landmarks such as this ancient church.

The city of San Augustin was founded by the Spanish in 1565, and was the capital of Spanish Territory for 200 years before it became capital of the Florida Territory in both British and American hands for another sixty years. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine was constructed in 1793 and is one of the oldest structures in the historic city.

More About the Cathedral and Other US National Historic Landmarks in St. Augustine

The Cathedral as it stands today is not the first cathedral built on this site in St. Augustine, there have been three prior buildings on these premises, the first of which was built in the 1560s. After fires and weather destroyed the first three cathedrals, the architects of the current Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine utilized more durable materials in the construction, such as Coquina stone.

Although the Cathedral is more than two hundred years old, there are a few older buildings in St. Augustine. The Oldest House title goes to the Gonzalez-Alvarez House, built during the first Spanish period in 1723. The Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse was built around 1716 out of cypress and red cedar held together with wooden pins.

The Castillo de San Marcos has the distinction of being the oldest masonry fort in the U.S., built on Matanzas Bay beginning in 1672. The King's Bakery was built to supply bread to British Troops in 1763, and is made from coquina stone. One more historical landmark that is a "must-see" during a historical tour of St. Augustine is the Augustine Lighthouse.
