A View Across New Haven In Connecticut Captured On An Attractive Fridge Magnet
New Haven is Connecticut's second largest city after Bridgeport; it has a population of approximately one hundred and thirty thousand. New Haven was founded by English Puritans in 1638. A year later eight streets were laid on a four by four grid with the central shared block being New Haven Green. Providing some more greenery New Haven had the first public tree planting programme in America. Many of the trees were large elms which gave the city the nickname of 'The Elm City'. Through colonial times New Haven continued to grow and it was incorporated as a city in 1784. The city's growth continued, and peaked after the Second World War. In 1954 the major of the time, Richard C Lee, began one of the earliest major urban renewals in the United States. Many buildings in downtown New Haven were destroyed to make way for modern office buildings, shopping complexes, and a hotel. The mix of architecture in the city can be seen pictured on this colourful acrylic fridge magnet from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts.
