Yale University is quite possibly the most well-known institution in Connecticut, famous the world over as a centre of educational excellence. First founded as a Collegiate School in 1701 the institution was housed in the home of its first rector Abraham Pierson and existed to train clergyman and the lay leadership. The college relocated to New Haven in 1718 and soon after was renamed Yale College. The new title was in honour of Elihu Yale, a successful Welsh businessman who presented valuable gifts to the college. The University has continued to grow since its humble beginnings and its main campus now covers two hundred and sixty acres in downtown New Haven.
