The Spectacular Devils Postpile National Monument In California
The extraordinary Devils Postpile National Monument in California makes for an unusual and amazing sight as captured on this colourful acrylic fridge magnet from the catalogues of World Wide Gifts. This amazing creation of nature is the result of the volcanic activity in the area. Between approximately eighty thousand to one hundred thousand years ago basalt lava was spewed from a vent in the earth and it flowed down the valley. Its flow was eventually blocked by a natural dam and it began solidifying where it lay. As the lava cooled and solidified so cracks formed with the strains and stresses. Eventually it became jointed, relieving some of the stress and creating strange patterns similar to those seen today. The site of the lava was disturbed by glacial activity revealing it to the eye and since that time the area has been shaped by the erosion of the weather and destruction of earthquakes. And so it has become the sight of unusual beauty that is pictured on our acrylic fridge magnet.
