Portage Lake - Alaska's Most Visited Water body

There are approximately 3 million lakes in the glacially dense region of Alaska. Of these, Portage Lake has gained a lot of tourist attention and has become the North American Mecca for snow related extreme sports including snowboarding, cross-country skiing, hiking, skating and mountain biking. Professional as well as amateur skiers, flock to the lake during the "crust skiing season" to participate in the various competitions that are organized. Cruises and short expeditions are popular activities among tourists. Portage Glacier Cruises conducts short cruises and gives visitors an opportunity to behold the face of the glacier from a close distance. Recreational boating, which was previously illegal on account of the danger of icebergs is another favorite pastime among locals and visitors alike. However, adequate precautions are to be taken to prevent accidents and mishaps. Swimming is strictly forbidden however due to the freezing temperatures prevalent all year round. Portage Lake falls under the purview of the Chugach National Forest of Alaska and has been one of the states prime tourist hotspots since 1914. The vinyl fridge magnet portrays a striking image of the snow covered Portage Lake in all its splendor and makes for an excellent holiday souvenir.
