Description

The Spectacular Fortress That Dominates the Skyline of Toledo on a Keepsake Magnet

This beautiful image is that of the magnificent Alcazar of Toledo and a lovely souvenir from Spain. It is a massive stone fortification that is built on the highest hill of Toledo with a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding countryside that extends for miles in every direction. It was a perfect location for a defensive fortress and has been one of the most important structures in this city since it was built and occupied by the Romans in the 3rd century. The Alcazar of Toledo was restored in the 1500s, and became central to the Spanish Civil War in the 20th century.

The Siege of the Alcazar is a nearly legendary event that has become central to the Spanish Nationalist lore and influenced the naming of a far-right newspaper that began during the Spanish Civil War, El Alcazar. There is a story that as Colonel Moscardo struggled to hold the Alcazar against Republican forces his sixteen year old son was taken hostage. When the son, Luis, told his father "Surrender or they will shoot me," the Colonel famously replied, "Then commend your soul to God and die like a hero."

Tourism at the Alcazar of Toledo

The magnificent fortress is a beautiful sight to behold from within the city below, but the view afforded from its heights is nothing short of incredible. The Alcazar is a fascinating place to explore, filled with objects of Spain's military history. The Biblioteca de Castilla La Mancha is the museum located in the Alcazar, where many items are displayed to depict life in medieval Spain. Visitors enjoy wandering through the museum, taking in the view from atop the walls, and enjoying the modern conveniences of a small cafe at the top that serves beer and tapas.
