Construction of the Cathedral

King Ferdinand III of Mauricio and Castile commanded the establishment of the Burgos Cathedral. The construction of the church commenced on 20th July, 1221 and the majority of the establishment was completed in nine years; after which people started using the church. The raised altar of the cathedral was sanctified during 1260. However, after which there was a lengthy two hundred year gap in the construction. Finally, in 1567 the church was completed. A French architect during the thirteenth century and a German architect during the fifteenth century were responsible for the establishment of the cathedral during those times. During 1417, John of Cologne took over the construction project and finished constructing the towers of the church.

Architecture of the Burgos Cathedral

The church was mainly constructed in pure French Gothic style but various works in Renaissance architectural style were incorporated into the cathedral in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It has three levels and has three entrances that have ogival shaped arched frames on their top. The church consists of numerous statues placed on pedestals and have the letters PULC[H]RA ES ET DECORA meaning 'Beautiful art Thou, and graceful' carved on them. The Burgos Cathedral was given the status of a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 31st October, 1984; and it is the only Spanish church to be declared as a World Heritage Site.
