Other Gastronomic Delights in the French Montagnes

Stone soup, soupe aux cailloux, is a traditional French peasant vegetable soup that is actually cooked with a couple of smooth river rocks. The stones move around when the soup boils, mixing together the vegetables and surprisingly preserving their flavor. You'll also enjoy a tasty Reblochon salad in the mountains, made from local Savoie cheese combined with orange, avocado and carrots.

The Berthoud is another montagnes specialty, a cheesey concoction of Abondance cheese and small potatoes cooked in their skins. The dish includes Savoie white wine and a little Chambery Vermouth. That one sounds tasty, but another local favorite is one that might take some getting used to: the ollada is a meal of pork knuckles, cabbage, potatoes, white beans and rancid lard. The Savoyard fondue sounds much more enjoyable.
