The Importance of Bison in Manitoba's History

The coat of arms of Manitoba depicts a large bison front and center. You would be correct to assume that they are a large part of Manitoba's history. This coat of arms serves as a symbolic reminder of the various bison that once roamed the province. Over two hundred years ago, you could have witnessed tens of thousands of them wandering the Manitoba prairie; the Native North Americans used them for a variety of purposes, including food, shelter, clothing, medicine, tools and even weapons. They really were incredible animals! However, the Native North Americans considered their relationship with the bison to be far more important than solely using them for materials and food - the bison was considered a religious object of worship. Unfortunately, the bison population has been drastically reduced today and it is far rarer to spot one grazing on the verdant Manitoba prairie than it was in the early 1800s. But if you get lucky and see one, it truly is a wonder to behold. The bison has become a majestic symbol of the province's pioneering spirit, and as a result, has become the official symbol of Manitoba's provincial government.

Show your Manitoba Pride with This High Quality Fridge Magnet

Even if you didn't get the chance to see a bison grazing on the Manitoba prairie in person, you can remember the history and importance of these animals with this lovely magnet keepsake. Not only does the coat of arms depict a buffalo, it also has the Cross of St. George at the top, symbolizing Canada's relationship with England. The Cross of St. George has been adopted on the coat of arms and flags of multiple countries and cities that deem St. George their patron saint.
