Orlando: Florida's Playground
The history of Orlando is an interesting one because it's so closely tied to the founding of Walt Disney World. While the Orlando area, located in the northern center of Florida, had been settled since the mid-19th century, and had seen a surge in population during the Florida Land Boom during the 1920s, it wasn't until Disney World opened in 1971 that Orlando really came into its own. Following the founding of Disney World Orlando's primary industry became tourism, and today it has more theme parks and tourist attractions than virtually anywhere else in the world. Disney chose Orlando over other larger Florida cities like Miami and Tampa in part because of its inland location, which gives it greater protection from the hurricanes that threaten the region each year. With a population of over 2 million, Orlando is Florida's third largest metropolitan area; that number doesn't account for the huge waves of tourists to Orlando, however, who annually account for nearly 50 million visits to the city! People tend to visit during the warm, dry season lasting from November to April, as the hot and wet season from May through October tends to see high temperatures--especially in the summer months.
