The History of Mecca

Mecca, which has also been referred to as Bakkah in its early years, was an important trading post, linking Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean. Camel caravans were used to transport goods, and there was quite a bit of trade which occurred with Mecca and other tries and nearby cities such as Syria and Iraq. Mecca was ruled by the sharifs, descendants of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. In 1925, Mecca became an official part of Saudi Arabia. During recent years, Mecca has expanded substantially, both in population and infrastructure. Unfortunately, many of the historical buildings and landmarks have been destroyed due to the recent construction of modern buildings.

The Holy Pilgrimage to Mecca

If you are visiting Mecca, it is most probably to either perform the sacred pilgrimages of Hajj or Umrah. Mecca is one of the holiest cities for Muslims, and the pilgrimage of Hajj is compulsory on all able Muslims. Over 15 million people visit Mecca annually. The Hajj brings believers back to the time of Abraham, and during this time they subsequently perform many different rituals. You must walk around the Ka'ba seven times, run between the hills of Al-Safa and Al-Marwah, drink from the well of Zamzam, and visit Mount Arafat. The Hajj is completed, and the people celebrate with the festival of Eid-Ul Adha. The Hajj is an amazing spiritual experience and has been noted to change the way people see their life.
