An Excellent Travel Souvenir from Big Sky Country

Long, open roads take travelers from one gorgeous mountain range to another under wide, blue skies amongst the picturesque natural beauty of the 41st state in the United States. This Worldwide State Flag Fridge Magnet makes a great souvenir from Montana or a patriotic keepsake for local residents.

The Montana State Flag features the official State Seal on a dark blue background with the word "Montana" printed above in large, gold block letters. The background picture on the seal shows a lovely sunrise coming up next to some snowy mountain peaks, and the gorgeous waterfalls of the Missouri River, as well as more of the mountains and hills that got the state its name.

Symbolism in the Seal and another State Nickname

In the foreground of the Montana State Seal are some items that are very significant to the history of the state's development, and some clues to Montana's other nickname, the Treasure State.

The plow refers to the state's farming and agricultural history and development. However, the pick, the shovel, and the motto are all part of why "Big Sky Country" is also treasure country. The Spanish words printed on a banner across the bottom of the seal read "Oro y Plata", which in English translates to "Gold and Silver."

In the middle of the 1800s some rich deposits of gold and silver were discovered in the mountains of Montana. Because of these rich mineral reserves, and because of an additional discovery of the most valuable gemstone in the United States (the sapphire) the state is very rich in mineral reserves. Montana is also called the Land of Shining Mountains, which could refer to the mineral wealth of the mountains, or maybe to their natural beauty. Another nickname, the Bonanza State, also alludes to the discovery of treasure in Montana and the sudden influx of wealth that resulted from the "Bonanza."
