What's in a Canadian Flag?
Canada's national flag has a simple form but is highly symbolic. Colloquially, it is known as the Maple Leaf in English and l'Unifolie (or the one-leafed) in French. Its basic design is a red maple leaf centered on a Canadian pale. This is a white, square central band bordering red bands on either side, each of which is half the size of the central band. The maple leaf itself has been used as a symbol of Canada since the 1700s, but the current flag has only been in use since 1965. Previous Canadian flags were typically variations on the British Red Ensign, which is a red field with the Union Jack, the British national flag, in the top left; these were used to highlight Canada's colonial relationship to Great Britain. Since its adoption, the Maple Leaf flag has become an iconic figure of Canadian nationality.
