The Colors of a Country

Most people wouldn't describe the Bolivian flag as exciting, but it paints the country in a noble light which may appeal to you. Often times, the colors on a flag, especially when just being a few, are representative of what one sees out in the country in question. In the northernmost countries, white is found throughout to represent the winter and snow, as well as all the aesthetics that go with it.

A Little of History

Known as the La Tricolor, the flag of Bolivia speaks of the complexity of this mestizo country located in the heart of South America. The flag combines the red, the yellow and the green and features the coat of arms in the yellow stripe. Each color owns a distinctive meaning. The red stands for the heroes who died to give birth to the new nation, the yellows represents wealth and the green hope.

Bolivia obtained its independence from Spain in 1825 after the army led by Antonio Jose de Sucre defeated the Spanish on April 1st. The country was named after Simon Bolivar who was considered the father of the new nation. After that, the country underwent periods of great prosperity as it was the case under the administration of Andres Santa Cruz. At that time the Peru-Bolivian Confederation was formed. However, wars against its neighbors followed including the War of the Pacific against Chile, when the country lost its way to the Pacific Ocean. One of Bolivia's best historical moments was the Bolivian National Revolution when universal education, free vote and a huge land reform were enforced. Today, the country is administered by a coalition of indigenous groups known as MAS. This travel souvenir can add a little color to your home and give a bit of an edge in terms of style.
