Displayed on the fridge magnet is a view of the largest and capital city of Albania- Tirana. The modern Tirana was started off as a small town during the reign of the Ottoman Empire in 1614. It was founded by Sulejman Bargini who was a ruler from Mullet. Tirana was declared as Albania's capital in sometime during 1920 and houses a population of over 400,000 people and its metro area has a population of over 763,634 people. The city is also home to lots of public institutions and many privately owned universities too; it also serves as the hub of all economical, academic, cultural and political activities taking place in Albania.
Geography of Tirana
The city is situated at 41.33 N and 19.82 E in Tirana District in Tirana County located on the River Ishem which is about thirty two kilometers from the inland. The average altitude of Tirana is 360 feet above the level of the sea and the highest point of the city is around 5,997 feet tall. Tirana generally comprises of numerous hills varying in height and geography. The Dajti Mountain situated in the east of the city is a famous highlight of the city. River Tirane runs through Tirana and the city also consists of four man-made lakes: Tirana Artificial Lake, Farka Lake, Tufina Lake and Paskugani Lake.
History of Tirana
The city has been inhabited by people since the Paleolithic times that date back to almost ten to thirty thousand years in the past. This was proved by the tools found in an excavation conducted in the quarry land of Mount Dajt. According to some sources, the oldest finds of the city is an interesting Roman house that was later converted to a church; it has an exquisite mosaic floor that dates back to the third century AD.
